Vogue was recently forced to release a new cover of it February issue, featuring the new Vice President of America, Kamala Harris, following severe backlash online.

The original chosen picture was posted to social media, showing Harris in a casual setting wearing converse and jeans. This sparked controversy, with people complaining that the picture was disrespectful towards the new vice president, and that it was way too casual compared to previous covers Vice Presidents have had.

There was confusion surrounding why Vogue would choose to use this image over a more formal cover that was released online, featuring Harris is a beautiful blue Michael Kors suit in front of an elegant gold background.

Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour came out soon after to defend the magazines decision on the cover.

In a statement to the New York Times, the editor said: “Obviously we have heard and understood the reaction to the print cover and I just want to reiterate that it was absolutely not our intention to, in any way, diminish the importance of the vice-president-elect’s incredible victory.”

She also went on to say her opinion of the cover, that it was “very, very accessible and approachable and real”. The reactions to the cover say different.

The lack of formalness wasn’t the only problem with the cover though, with social media users questioning whether Harris’ skin had been lightened. Just back in August, Vogue was put on blast with accusations of failing to light the skin of cover star Simone Biles correctly.
