With October approaching rapidly, it is time to celebrate Black History Month! Black History Month is an annual celebration to look at the most inspirational Black figures and how they shaped today’s society.

After the increase of protests for the Black Lives Matter movement this summer, Black History Month is vital to celebrate and recognise. So, how is the UK celebrating this annual celebration this time around? In London, Glasgow, Cardiff and Belfast, Royal Mail post-boxes have been painted black and each of them feature a historical figure in British Black history. The post-boxes also have QR codes leading to a page with further information about these inspirational figures and their success.
Along with this, in an attempt to try to teach more young people about Black history, Black Lives Cornwall has put together a whole series of free lessons for schools to utilise. This is an amazing way to help educate children on Black history and the British figures who inspire millions of people to this day.
Teaching Black history has been the topic of debate for a few months now after several petitions were created in an attempt to get Black History added to the British curriculum. Due to the lack of education surrounding Black History, many young people are unaware of how vital it is.
Despite these petitions accumulating over 35,000 signatures, the answers to this subject remain unclear. However, this does not make Black History Month any less important and it should be utilised as an opportunity to teach and celebrate about prevalent Black History.
