Today is a commemorative day for the Memorial of all those lives lost during The Holocaust. Among those killed were six million Jewish people whose lives we remember today.

Barnsley council are holding an online service this year so that families across Barnsley can take part in the event Covid safe. This will allow everyone to play their part still although for the first time it cannot be in person. The message for this years’ service is to ‘Be the Light in the Darkness’ which is a great message not only for remembering those who have died, but also during the pandemic to reflect on our own lives.
You can sign up to join the event by visiting the Barnsley council website to receive the link. It will take place between 7pm and 8pm UK time this evening (Wednesday 27th)
The aim of the event is to educate the generation to learn from the pasts mistakes and reflect on how we can take action to make sure we all have a bright future. These events are important to the families of those who were victims to event like this and also to make sure nobody has to relive any of the horrific experiences those involved did.

Councillor Caroline Makinson, Mayor of Barnsley, has said that ‘The Holocaust was, without doubt, a defining event of the 20th Century, and it’s so important that we continue to commemorate it today and ensure our future generations continue to shine this light.’ Today also marks the anniversary of the liberation of the largest Nazi Germany death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. The Mayor of Barnsley has asked the local public to ‘stand in solidarity’ this week and take a minute to commemorate the Jewish and all the victims. For anyone who would like to show the support people are encouraged to light candles or any light display and display them on their windowsills in accordance to the theme
