Today marks the day where we remember all the lives which were sadly lost due to the tragedy of the Holocaust under the Nazi Persecution and in the genocides, which followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. Holocaust Memorial Day gives people a time to reflect on the terrifying times when these millions of warriors had to battle when they were devastatingly murdered.

With the outbreak of a second world war, millions went into hiding after Germany invaded Poland in 1939 subjecting two million Polish Jews to violence and forced labour. Thousands of Jews were murdered in the first few months of the occupation. Shortly after the occupation Polish Jews were confined to particular neighbourhoods which were known as ‘ghettos’. The living conditions there were appalling a deliberate attempt by the Nazis to cause the death of hundreds and thousands of Jews. Sadly, it was repeated across Eastern Europe in other countries.
By the end of 1941 the first extermination camp, Chelmo in Poland, had been established. Giving the Nazis their method to continue murdering on a giant scale between 1941-1945.
By the end of the Holocaust, six million Jewish Men, Women and Children had been tragically murdered in ghettos, mass shootings, concentration camps and extermination camps.
This is one if not the biggest tragedy in history and it must never be forgotten no matter how long it has been since the event. Innocent people lost their lives and was targeted which is cruel and unnecessary. This is an iconic piece of history which must never be forgotten and never occur again. A heart-breaking moment in history which has haunted the lives of many.
