The walk safe route has just launched on the 14th of October connection Barnsley Hospital to the Town Centre on Summer Lane. It is fully funded by the government’s Safer Streets Fund, and they are committed to ensuring that Barnsley remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

To help keep the walk route safe that connects the town Centre, Barnsley Hospital and the Seam CCTV footage will be extended into key public places to ensure people are able to enjoy their walk whilst feeling safe and secure. The CCTV footage is now live, which covers the entire route, will hopefully reduce any safety concerns that people have along this route.

This project is the first of many that are helping to improve public safety throughout Barnsley. In addition to this South Yorkshire Police have recently launched an app called ‘WalkSafe’ the free app will allow people to plan their routes and identify locations which are known as a safe destination hopefully making people feel happier and safer when going on a walk without having to worry.

The app includes a range of features such as sharing your location with people you trust, notifying them when you reach home safely and seeing different venues that meet safety training standards.

Hopefully with the new safe route and the free app community safety will improve for anyone travelling between Barnsley Hospital and the town Centre and in the future, this can be extended, or other projects can go ahead to help people feel happier and secure. With these changes the newly installed CCTV will help residents and staff enjoy their journeys on foot.
