Angry Arnautovic apologises for celebration but denies racist language used

Austria forward Marko Arnautovic has apologised for his reaction towards North Macedonia fans after scoring in Austria’s 3-1 victory over the European Championship debutants however he denied using racism against them

The second half substitute who struck late in Sunday’s victory, seemed furious as he celebrated his goal before captain David Alaba stepped in to stop him.


A few media reports have also said that the former Stoke City and West Ham player directed his anger at the North Macedonian players Egzon Bejtulai and Gjanni Alioski with both players having Albanian roots.


On Instagram, the 32-year-old who has a Serbian background said:


“There were some heated words yesterday in the emotions of the game for which I would like to apologise- especially to my friends from North Macedonia and Albania”.


“I would like to say one thing very clearly: I am not a racist. I have friends in almost every country and I stand for diversity. Everyone who knows me is aware of that.”


There is historic tension between Serbia and North Macedonia as Serbia does not recognise the independence of its former province Kosovo.


North Macedonia are next to play Ukraine while Austria take on the Netherlands at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam on Thursday.


North Macedonia are calling on UEFA to investigate Marko Arnautovic remarks.
