Gap Inc. is the latest company to join the fight for a sustainable and better future within the fashion industry, with the retail shop joining the 2025 Sustainable Cotton Challenge. The challenge, which was formed in 2017 through the Prince of Wales and a group of CEOs, proposes to encourage brands to sourcing 100% sustainable cotton by 2025. Hoping to reduce the climate crisis and increase the uptake of organic and preferred cotton, the challenge could increase the income of smallholder farmers, as well as reduce water use and improve water quality and soil health. Today, cotton across the world is 22% more sustainable, and the vision is that this number will increase to more than 50% by 2025. Over 82 companies are now committed to this challenge, with that number growing.

With the environmental side of the fashion industry being exposed in recent years, and the demand for a more sustainable future, this is a step in the right direction, and we’re hoping that more brands follow suit. Dr. Gary Adams, president of the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol, explained his thoughts on this in a press release, saying that “Gap Inc.’s brands are in every household, including my own, and I am personally honored it has chosen to work with us because it’s a global company that takes sustainability seriously. Gap Inc. has made significant strides since setting sustainability goals, and the Trust Protocol’s farm-level data will help it in its mission to improve its impact and protect our natural resources. By signing onto the Trust Protocol, Gap Inc. will support our shared mission to educate U.S. growers around the most sustainable growing practices and support grower enrollment.”
